about

I Want to do to You What Spring Does to Cherry Trees

Michael Bisio Accortet (Relative Pitch) remains in my heart among the top five recordings I’ve ever made whether as leader, co- leader or sideman.
This recording chronicled thirty plus years of my life as a composer in song form and otherwise. It was recorded February 6, 2014 at Park West Studios, Brooklyn, NY by Jim Clouse, produced by Mike Panico and released on Relative Pitch Records September 9, 2015.

There was however a precursor to Accortet, a drummerless ensemble with Kirk Knuffke-cornet, Art Bailey-accordion and myself on bass. November 29, 2012 I asked the cats to meet at Park West Studios to record a ballad I had just completed as a present to a remarkable French woman. I was thrilled with the recording, (so was she, I hope she still is). But … when I shopped it labels kept asking if I would consider a drummer. After some months I decided to ask my good friend Michael Wimberly and Accortet was born.

Listening back to the original trio recordings I am finding great beauty and relevance. For Bandcamp Friday November 4, 2022 I am offering the original recordings of I Want To Do To You What Spring Does To Cherry Trees.
The two versions are available for download for only $3.00. The first version is played in traditional ballad manner, the second a much freer interpretation.
Phil Freeman writing in the New York City Jazz Record called I Want to Do to You What Spring Does to Cherry Trees one of the most purely lovely pieces of music in recent memory. I believe these earlier versions would/will be embraced as warmly.
